Abstract entitled "Assessment of "Element of sustainable city for urban environmental management of Kathmandu Valley"
Urbanization is the process of population growth residing in urban areas. In context of Nepal, Kathmandu Valley is the largest urban center of the country with 1.7 million populations with decadal population growth rate of 60.93%. This research was conducted to identify the driving factors of urbanization, describe the consequences on environmental components and assess the element of sustainable cities to manage the urban environmental issues of Kathmandu Valley. For the study, both qualitative as well quantitative data were collected via literature reviews, questionnaire survey, key informant interviews and site visit. Questionnaire survey was conducted among 183 respondents inside the valley and 52 from outside the Valley.
Based on survey, 86% of people stated the centralized infrastructure services i.e. presence of education institutions, equipped hospitals and industrial activities being the major driving factors of inflow towards valley. Increasing urbanization led to negative consequences on environmental component i.e. increasing air pollutants, unavailability of sanitary landfill site, comparatively low water supply as per demand, loss of scenic beauty, deterioration of agricultural land, etc.
Major activities such as adaptation of Integrated Solid Waste Management System; prioritization of nonmotorized vehicle for sustainable transportation; designing of recreational sites and open space for sustainable habitability; promotion of rainwater harvesting technology and enhancement of groundwater for sustainable water supply; well-designed land use plan with designated areas for residential expansion, urban industries, etc.; exploration of feasible alternative sources for sustainable energy; and prioritization of green buildings are recommended in order to achieve the indicators of sustainable city.
